Simple Bathroom Makeover Ideas

Need a change in your life? Rather than making a big move, how about transforming just one small room in your home, like your bathroom?

We find ourselves feeling so limited with what we can do in our homes, including our bathrooms, because there are things that we can’t change without incurring some serious costs. Tile, counter tops, sink, tub, and toilets all come with a hefty price tag. Ever seen a bathroom that has tile that goes half way up the walls all in a lovely 1960′s robin egg blue? Rather than incurring a great cost, why not find ways to work within what is there instead of hating it.

Kelly at Flylady.com has some great suggestions for making a “bathroom adjustment”:

1. The very first thing to do in your bathroom is to get rid of all the excess surface clutter. This means the hair brushes, lotions, toothbrushes that are on the countertops. How much stuff do you have in there that you really don’t need, but have become accustomed to seeing? Toss the items that are trash, relocate items that are taking up space. Bathrooms are generally small rooms, the more stuff you have in them the smaller they will appear.

2. Take a moment to review the space you have. Can you place necessary items (but not necessarily needed right on the countertop) someplace else? Now scrub that sink and counter area. Scrub the faucets and the overflow drain holes with an old toothbrush. Make the sink and counter area sparkle.

3. Take down your shower curtain and toss it in the washing machine. Take a look at the liner – does it need to be replaced or will washing take care of it? Liners are very inexpensive. Get rid of the soap slivers, empty hair care bottles, body wash bottles, and other items filling the tub area. Now scrub the tub and shower area really well. This means the walls, floors, sides, faucets and drains. If you have shower doors instead of a shower curtain then go after these as well.

4. Time to tackle the toilet. Get rid of anything that is piled up on the back of the toilet. Next remove the fuzzy covers or rugs and either wash them or toss them. These are items that we have a tendency to ignore because they are just always there. Now it is time to clean the toilet – the whole thing, inside the bowl, the seat, the lid, and the base. Take a look at the toilet seat and assess if you need a new one. These are a bit of a challenge to replace as getting to the nuts underneath are a little tough, but well worth the time!

5. Take a look at the floor. Grab all of the mats and rugs – wash them or toss them! Take the wastebasket, empty it, and wash it out. Once you have removed the rugs and mats, give the floor a good sweeping and scrub. See what else you have taking up space on the floor of the bathroom. Do you have a magazine basket or stand that is overflowing? Clean it out! How about a bathroom scale that or is broken or you no longer use? Toss it!

6. Take a look at what you have hanging on the walls. Do you love the decorations you have? If so, clean them up and make them shine. If you don’t love them, remove them and take a look around your house to see if you have something that you would like to move from another room to the bathroom to have a fresh new look. Maybe it is time to leave the walls blank for a few days to see if you really need anything. The walls may need to be washed, especially if you use hair spray. Check the wall that is directly behind where you normally stand when you spray your hair. If you have paint that you dislike, assess and see what it will take to repaint your bathroom. Either way, cleaning the walls will be necessary. Take time to really shine the mirrors and wipe down the light fixtures. Replace the light bulbs if any are burned out.

7. If you have a window in your bathroom, shine up the sills and the glass. Look at the curtains or blinds. Do they need to be washed and ironed? If you have mini blinds that are beyond dusting you can try cleaning them. You can take them down and put in the bathtub with some general purpose cleaner and hot water, let them soak and then use the shower to rinse them. Leave them there to dry and then re-hang.

8. Take a look at the towels you are using. Do you have nice towels in your linen closets you are saving for company? Realistically, how often are these towels used? and why don’t you and your family deserve a nice new towel?. Take a look through your towels and see what needs to be tossed and put out some of your towels that you love. When you have things around you that you love it inspires you to take care of them and enjoy them.

These are all very easy things that you can do to take care of your bathroom and give it a fresh clean look. Once you have done these things you can re-assess and see if there are any more changes that you want to make. Remember to take your time and don’t do all of this at once. Pace yourself. Have a positive outlook and enjoy blessing your home. These are all things that will take time but not a lot of money. The cost of a shiny and fresh spacious bathroom? Priceless! Sometimes just some small steps, elbow grease, and trash bags will make a huge difference.
